KAiN

Our dream is to create a new and inclusive perspective about autism that leads to mutual understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity in our society.

An autistic man without boundaries wants to get his drivers licence to prove he can function as a normal person in society. Though the question arises 'what is actually normal'?

A Feature Film

With the tragicomic love story KAIN, we are making a film based on the life and brilliant thinking of our friend Daniël Gellvoet, who lives in a residential group for people with autism in the heart of Amsterdam. Daniël often feels he is seen as 'not normal', and this unintentionally places him outside society.

KAIN is a heartfelt story about the struggle of a person with autism in a neuro-typical society that does not see him as normal.

Kain is based on Daniel's character and his unique form of autism, and he will play the lead role of Kain. So the film will not only be ABOUT Daniel, but -and this is essential- will be made WITH him.

We want to show two perspectives; that of the group without autism, who can easily live by the norms, and the group who have difficulty with the behavioural norms and are labelled with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to pigeonholing, deviant people are often not considered a full person. It is very sad when they come to believe in this themselves too. This realisation affected us greatly and thus the story KAIN was born.

In KAIN, we deal with the current and socially relevant themes of self-acceptance, perception and exclusion. And all with a touch of (black) humour. We show how a person with autism perceives society, especially our social manners, the roles we assume and the masks we wear as individuals. These contradictions are sometimes very difficult for a person with autism to understand.

Through Kain's experience, we become more aware about ourselves and our social forms of behaviour. We are making this film for a wide audience because this film is about all of us.

Target Group

In this story, we want to create understanding for the 1.5% of the population who have autism. To reach as large an audience as possible, we are doing this with a mainstream feature film. KAIN will be a widely appealing love story, like Romeo and Juliet. Two people from a different group who love each other, having a relationship is made difficult by the environment: different habits, assumptions and prejudices.

Our primary target audience for this feature film is women aged 25-50 and their families, as well as those with autism: they are going to see themselves reflected on the silver screen.
